b. 4-5

composition: Op. 28 No. 12, Prelude in G♯ minor

Separate slurs in A

Continuous slur in #KC (→GE) & FE (→EE)

..

In A there is a phrase mark over b. 1-4 and also another one, which, when interpreted literally, starts from the 2nd quaver in b. 5. Therefore, nothing indicates Chopin's intention to combine them, hence the interpretations of both FC and FE must be considered erroneous (besides, the copyist considered the division of the phrase mark in b. 7-8 and 8-9 to be accidental too). Moreover, we assume that the beginning of the phrase mark in b. 5 is inaccurate in A; according to our interpretation, it starts from the 1st quaver. It is justified by the fact that in a few other situations Chopin equated a phrase mark beginning between the 1st and 2nd quavers to a phrase mark running clearly from the 1st quaver, e.g. b. 1 and 9 or 29 and 31. See also the note to b. 54-55.

b. 40-41

composition: Op. 28 No. 12, Prelude in G♯ minor

Slur from 2nd beat in A (→FC, contextual interpretation→FE)

Slur from bar 41 in GE

Slur from 3rd beat in EE

..

From b. 41 on, A (→FC) is written down in an abridged manner – it contains empty, numbered bars, which are a repetition of b. 1-8. The phrase mark in b. 40 clearly suggests that it should be continued, which we interpret (in accordance with FE) as an earlier beginning of the first phrase mark of the repeated fragment. GE did not consider the phrase mark in b. 40 at all, while in EE it starts only just on the 3rd beat of the bar; besides, both versions cannot be authentic.

b. 79-80

composition: Op. 28 No. 12, Prelude in G♯ minor

Slur from 2nd beat in A (literal reading→FCGE)

Slur from 1st beat in A (contextual interpretation→FEEE)

..

The beginning of the slur in b. 79 falls in A between the 1st and 2nd crotchets. A comparison with b. 77 and suggestive examples of slurs written in a "pointing" manner, e.g. the L.H. slur in b. 78-79, suggest that the slur should start from the 1st crotchet, as was interpreted in FE (→EE). However, in the main text we suggest a literal interpretation of the slur, i.e. from the 2nd crotchet, to keep the difference between b. 77 and 79, clearly visible in A. This is how Fontana interpreted that slur in FC (→GE), regardless of the erroneous placement of the notes (wrong pitch).
